James L. Filbey was born just outside of London in Colchester, England, the oldest recorded town in Great Britain. Charismatic by nature and entrepreneurial by temperament, James began to establish his legacy as a business savvy entrepreneur by selling gentlemen's clothing at a time when boys his age were more interested in playing cricket and rugby.
